Why people cold plunge

Cold water isn’t a cure-all, and I’m not going to sell it as one. Here is what the research actually supports, and where it doesn’t.

Recovery from hard training

Cold water immersion reduces exercise-induced muscle damage, and the inflammation and soreness that follow a hard session. This is the best-evidenced benefit, and for most people it is the reason to start.1,2,3

Stress resilience

Regular cold exposure is linked to lower cortisol and higher endorphin and norepinephrine levels, which shows up as better resilience to stress. Worth knowing that this builds over the hours after a plunge rather than flipping your mood on the spot.4,5

Sleep quality

Some people report sleeping better with regular immersion. The research is clearer in men than in women, so treat it as something many people notice rather than something the setup guarantees.5,6

Immune function

Some evidence points to immune benefits with regular practice, though the research here is still developing. Frequent cold-water swimmers show higher white blood cell counts and fewer upper respiratory infections.7,8,9
